At its core, our Day Treatment program in Nevada is about connection, consistency, and showing up—day after day—for young people who need it most. But beyond the structure, therapy, and skill-building, it’s the relationships and shared experiences that truly define what this program means.

For Houston Pafe, who has been part of the program for eight years, those moments are what stand out most.

Building Something That Lasts

Houston didn’t initially set out to work in Day Treatment. With a background in child development and family studies, she began her career in mental health services and quickly realized she wanted something more—something deeper than brief, transactional interactions.

“I was always looking to truly make a difference,” she shared. “Not just check a box or meet with a youth for an hour a month. Here, you get to know them. You get to grow with them.”

That longevity is what makes this program unique. Staff don’t just support youth in passing—they walk alongside them for months, sometimes years. And even after youth leave the program, those connections often remain.

“The kids I started with at 13 are now in their 20s,” Houston said. “When I see them, they still talk about the memories we made here.”

Building Traditions and Belonging

Many of the youth in Day Treatment come from complex backgrounds. Some are in foster care, while others live with biological families—but regardless of their situation, many have not experienced consistent traditions or a sense of belonging.

That’s why the program intentionally creates those moments.

One of the most meaningful traditions? Annual holiday celebrations.

Each year, staff and youth go Christmas tree cutting together—venturing out into the forest to choose trees and spend time together. Around the holidays, the program hosts a large celebration complete with a shared meal, gifts, and holiday rituals that many youth haven’t experienced before.

“For a lot of them, this is the first time they’ve had traditions like this,” Houston explained. “That’s why they hold onto it so tightly.”

Learning Through Real-Life Experiences

While therapy is a key component of Day Treatment, learning happens in many different ways.

Each day includes:

  • Group therapy led by clinicians
  • Psychoeducational groups focused on social-emotional learning
  • Homework support
  • Shared meals
  • Structured routines that create stability

But beyond the daily schedule, the program emphasizes real-world experiences that build confidence and life skills.

One recent example: a youth-led bake sale.

With support from staff and community partners, youth planned, budgeted, baked, and sold their own goods—raising over $1,000. They learned teamwork, financial literacy, and communication skills, all while discovering strengths they didn’t know they had.

“One of our kids was out there selling like a pro,” Houston shared. “You could just see him light up. Those are the moments where they realize what they’re capable of.”

The Power of Community

A defining feature of the Nevada Day Treatment program is its strong connection to the community.

Houston has helped build partnerships with local organizations to expose youth to new opportunities—things they might not otherwise experience. From kickboxing classes to equine therapy, these activities introduce youth to healthy outlets and supportive adults outside of the program.

“These relationships matter,” Houston said. “It’s important for them to see that there are other safe, caring adults in the world.”

Over time, those connections grow. Community partners show up to support youth at events like the bake sale, reinforcing a powerful message: you are seen, and you matter.

Trusting the Process

Progress in Day Treatment doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, it’s often slow and nonlinear.

“There are times where it feels like nothing is changing,” Houston admitted. “But when you look back, you see it. The growth is there.”

That perspective—trusting the process—is something she’s learned over the years. Even when youth struggle or take steps backward, the foundation being built doesn’t disappear.

“Even if they backslide, the progress isn’t undone,” she said. “It’s still there.”

Why It Matters

The Day Treatment program in Nevada is more than a structured schedule or a set of services. It’s a place where young people can experience stability, build relationships, and begin to see a different future for themselves.

It’s where traditions are created, confidence is built, and healing begins—one day at a time.

And this work doesn’t happen alone. It takes dedicated staff, committed community partners, and generous supporters who believe every young person deserves the opportunity to feel connected, supported, and hopeful about what comes next.

You can help make these moments possible. Consider supporting Koinonia’s Day Treatment program through a donation, or reach out to explore how your business, organization, or community group can partner with us to support the young people we serve.
